Thomas Anders Cosmic – The new Modern Talking 2021?

Thomas Anders' long awaited new album is finally out and Modern Talking fans were waiting for it with certain positive and negative expectations.

As we could predict, Thomas has fans who are quite pleased with this release, they belong to his hardcore fan base, those who would literally love even a "La cucaracha" sung by their star because they will never question anything or dare to show any discomfort, so for them the style, the genre, the language, the lyrics, whatever comes from Thomas is fine and celebrated in the same way, they are simply in love with the voice and the person that Thomas is and he has a large group of those fans.

But Thomas also has fans from different backgrounds, we would say, the more serious ones, the ones who care about the music, strict with the style and are not so easy to fool. Most of them were Modern Talking fans, the biggest fan base that has been divided by decades between TA fans, DB fans and the last years with a smaller but passionate group of SIB fans.

The album was announced by Thomas Anders' producer, Christian Geller, in a controversial video where he assured that they were going to work with the "original" Modern Talking choir. That news ran like a river through the social network and a clarification was demanded, why? Many fans thought that Thomas would finally work with Systems In Blue, an opportunity so desired and awaited by the fan community, but later we realized that it was just a misunderstanding. Geller was referring to the chorus of replacements for that real original chorus from the 80s, those who arrived in the middle of the MT comeback era. And also a bit weird that it was announced this way, when there are videos of earlier releases like "History" where Thomas himself told the cameras that he was already working with that same choir from the 2000s. So it was actually not the first time they worked together. Mr. Geller are you trying to fool us?.

The announcement from Christian Geller

Then would come the single "Cosmic Rider", a nice song with a nice video clip and a super Thomas singing on a virtual stage, all nice but ..... what about the music?... the most demanding fans of the classic MT side couldn't avoid expressing their "what the hell!" and some others even created their own version of the song. Now thanks to technologies it is easier to extract an acapella and change the music. The result was amazing, this is the real sound the new songs should follow, they claimed. Hey Mr. Geller, look here please, consider it! But none of these remixes were official. Geller just ignored them and kept releasing little samples one by one, each time proving that nothing was coming for those fans.

 Original:

 Remix by fans:

That decision disappointed 80's lovers and the samples that came didn't help showing another obvious flaw of this album, the chorus and falsetto sounded like famished vocals trying to achieve a sound that was glorious in the past. What happened to the chorus, getting the right MT high pitched vocals is not such an easy thing as Bohlen tried to prove by undervaluing that work a few years ago. Modern Talking's background vocals were always an exceptional part of every classic song, falsettos are the brand and the most important part of Modern Talking since the beginning.

So how dare you claim that this new Thomas Anders album sounds like Modern Talking. We can even dare to speculate what the producer's idea might have been, maybe a: "I'll take two or three old MT songs from their last albums, change some melodies, write new lyrics and hire someone who sang on this chorus at that time, that's all. Enough to become popular with the fans and be number one in the charts like Dieter Bohlen himself."

Not that the effort to sound like Modern Talking made by the producer is not visible, the references are clear to anyone. The structure of the songs following the classic verse, prechoir and falsetto chorus are also there, the same bars and sequence, but it is the technical details that perhaps needed more effort, the songs are limited to copying the same bass line with the same repetitive sound of piano, drums, hit hats and snares that in some cases has created cloned melodies that barely change from track to track. The rest comes so forced to fit that in the end it has only produced a MT parody album. Not even Thomas Anders' vocals could save it. Not to mention the chorus, I'm sorry but it's hard to believe that Mr. Billy King is singing there. The album contains nine uptempo songs and three ballads, some quite faithful to MT's past style or more than faithful they are almost slight new versions of the same songs. And not being so demanding with the chorus (which is actually a sin), we can enjoy some tracks like "Je ne sais pas" (but come on... it's almost the same "Rouge et Noir"), "Today, tonight, together" (a shameless copy of "no face no name no number"), "Moonlight In Your Eyes",... and by the way, I wonder if "Another Night, Another Heartache" was a demo for a song with Florian Silberestein.

As for the lyrics it's funny how we are even able to guess the words that follow, they were also faithful to the lack of ideas from the MT times and made it easier this time by mentioning words related to MT history that only fans can understand. We even have a whole song talking about the "Modern Conversation" that connects the nations. But it's just a tricky mention because the meaning is not related to the Modern Talking as the popular cult band of the 80s.

In fact, it's something that may give us pause for a reflection. It was good that MT was over at the time, it could even have been before, it was just that at the time we, the fans, didn't want it to happen. But Bohlen suddenly took the illusion away from us one day when he stopped it without previously discussing it with Thomas Anders, he saw what we could not. Because we were clinging so furiously to MT, we didn't realize that it was already dead. All the albums especially after Year Of The Dragon already sounded quite different, totally moving away from the original essence it once had, and just copying known hits from that time. This new album by Thomas Anders does nothing but continue this same line.

So, can we call it the new Modern Talking from 2021?

No and yes,

-No, because it's not nearly what we can expect from a legendary band like Modern Talking. No, because it doesn't maintain the combination of melodies together with the right harmonies that only MT could create in their time. During the 80's when the sound conditioned real gear existed and the environment of those sounds were everywhere all the time, it sounded simply magnificent, it was new and it was original, now we are not able to repeat that because it is just past. And no, because it simply doesn't have the quality, innovation and professionalism that it should require.

-Yes, because after the return of Modern Talking in 1998, we realized that the rules were broken and with that a new kind of MT was developing. Yes, because it follows the path it was decided to follow since then, an obvious involution year after year. Modern Talking survived only until 2003, but the discomfort with their music and that way they took to create the new songs was happening already years before. Almost all of those new songs were based on others that were having some success around the world, it was the point that began to show the sad evidence that the project became just a mediocre band trying to stand on its feet using stolen tunes made by people who just wanted a paycheck.

At least Bohlen had the consideration to decide to stop it when it was simply impossible to keep it going. But Thomas has now brought it back to the same point where he left it, maybe even in the worst way, because there is not a drop of originality.

In conclusion, you can consider it a Modern Talking of 2021 if you want, in the best case you can take it as a sort of "homage to MT", but after the way it was announced and presented being a long awaited official new album from former Modern Talking vocalist, popular singer Thomas Anders, the album was a complete disappointment. It is nothing more than the disaster Bohlen tried to avoid. And we know that it doesn't need any good producer or mixer to get that second-era sound by following the same method. All it takes is someone who has been in the music business long enough that he can easily change a couple of tunes from an old, forgotten hit at random to create a new one and play with the fans by managing the promotion.... Now we just have recycled melodies, stolen lyrics and titles and full of MT references appealing to nostalgia with things that will make us remember something that will never come back.

Special present from Itamar Moraz

This year after the release of Melange Bleu, the third album of SIB, our friend Itamar Moraz put special attention to one track of the album. The song that clearly was done as homage to "You're My Heart You're My Soul" of Modern Talking. Quickly he began to device an 80's version of this song, so with the special talent and exigence that is a featuring of Itamar, the first demos were ready. The second step had to be done. To send this track to Karel Post, one of the persons who own the original gear and equipment able to reconstruct the original sounds of 80's.

So they agreed a meeting were of course the SIB guys were also invited. was in this way that they all met in the mixroom-one studio of Karel Post in Netherlands for make this new version, which has been announced to be released as a special vinyl for collectors.
Althought was expected the song could be release on december, we still have not an exactly date for it, but lot of fans are already interested in get it.

Ten years without Rolf Köhler

Time goes flying and we can not really believe that are already ten years since we lost our master Singer Rolf Köhler. The truth is we feel so sad as the first day, to recall all those days when we suddenly got the late new, a tragedy that no one of us could expect and let us totally devastated.

We had so many plans, we were building many dreams, our favorite trio was working in the new second album and the so waited production in collaboration with the singer Mark Ashley was also in progress, there were so many stuff to do. I remember the words of Detlef, he said, this time they will make a big tour for promote the new album, oh yeah, I could imagine that and was so exciting, Systems In Blue finally would start to show themselves as they deserve. About 15 days before the tragedy, Rolf gave a last concert in Burow, performing a new song of this album. Was a promise of success, maybe there was a chance this time, but fatality crossed us and all became just broken dreams.
By many time we lived in a big uncertainly, what to do?, when the leader and the motor of our projects has gone. Rolf was the boss and he let us all alone, I felt orphan once again. My unreleased fansite about him was forced to become a tribute site, my promo-picture-editions became memorials, my hopes became grief. There were a lot of people with a broken heart. Michael and Detlef had the hard mission to keep what was left, to continue despite the pain, and together some of us, we denied to let the last Rolf’s project die, "good music never dies", Rolf said it once and we have it even more clear when we recall his words in a german song, "Träume sterben nie", our dreams will never die.
Now ten years since then, a new album of Systems In Blue was released, yeah they got it, it cost so much and they had all against, nobody can say that was easy, but in your name dear Rolf, we had to let that pain and tears in the way. And we never forget you, your memory makes us stronger, you came to this world for inspire thousands of people around the world and this legacy will survive.

Ten years without Rolf’s voice, but we are still listening him, ten years without his company, but he is still with us, everytime we remember his name he is alive again.

If you want let some words to Rolf, you can visit his memorial site.

The third Systems In Blue album

Finally is here!!! yes... the new and so long time waited Systems In Blue album finally is here. The official release had to be advanced for personal reasons, but it's ok. Fans finally got to hear and enjoy the tracks that Detlef, Michael and Olaf were working long time for them. And for our surprise this is a different album, a new point of no return that came out of the blue.
Here my personal review.

They start with the song that had to be the real title of this album, “Back In Blue”, it seems it came a bit late, in fact this track was missing in the previous release of the special EP called “Back In Blue”, funny that the record name didn’t include the title song. The truth is that the EP name had to be Melange Bleu instead Back In Blue and viceversa, but things happened in this way. Back In Blue starts with an hypnotizing irish chanting that make it sounds epic, and lyrics seems to be a fast chronic of all what happened to SIB after Rolf's lost, all the struggle, the breaking, the rebuilding, the triumph and the comeback against all odds. Olaf sings it wonderful, we said since the beginning, he was a great and positive addition for the band, his voice is fresh and energetic. One thing that doesn’t fit in this track is the sample of "Ma Baker"... actually we don’t understand what has to do it there, anyway it contributes with the catchy rhythm and really doesn’t disturb too much.

The second song is the more favorite of fans. “There’s No Heart”, resembles directly to a known hit of our more sacred stuff as MT fans. Actually I believe the complete name of this song had to be “There’s No Heart, There’s No Soul”, but maybe it would make it too evident. If we recall, Detlef commented in a past interview that he would like to make his own version of YMHYMS, the classic hit of Modern Talking, and he fulfilled his promise now with the inclusion of this track in this album. Of course this version is a clear and total SIB version, is not an 80’s song and not a remix, is a new track in homage to the old hit of MT with different variations in arrangements and voices. The high pitch choir has also a curious even higher extension, a luxury we only can have on a SIB album.

Now the third song, maybe it was one of the more commented before the release, the intro of "Lady Ocean" is similar to a classic Eurodance hit of 90’s, but that’s the only thing, so no!, is not a cover of Haddaway, the rest of the song is a total different song and one with a more rich variation of sounds and arrangements. I have to admit that my favorite part is when they sing “Here we go! Talking Forever…”, once you are into the rhythm and tune you can realize that is a very typical SIB song. Vocal parts of Scholz sound a bit weak in this version but  the company of Olaf get to save it.

The fourth track is our already well known song of the first single, “Take It Like A Man”, and maybe for the time listening it, our ears are used to it already, this is probably the more loyal to the old typical SIB sound, but with a weak instrumental part that didn’t convinced since the first time. Anyway is one of the favorite of fans, so we think the song already got its public.

The next fifth song is a ballad, normally we expect to have one or two ballads in every album and in same way than in Out Of The Blue, “All That I Need” keeps the dance style despite is not an uptempo song. Olaf has here a chance for show the power of his vocals and has let to many fans surprised with it.

The track number six  is “If You Go”, the more sad song of the album, the background music recalls maybe some 80’s eurodisco beats of bands like Bad Boys Blue, arrangements are well done and lyrics just tell all. A sincere message from SIB to their fans… very touching and emotional for those who were followers of this band since the beginning.  Michael sings it with a raspy and decayed voice that give to the song an even stronger gloomy touch and it sounds contrasting when suddenly appears the clean vocals of Olaf, singing a bonus part after the second refrain. Maybe not a song for become a hit, but a song for be in the top one right there in the heart.

Next song is “It’s Ok”, SIB guys sing this song in good harmony, you won’t hear a dominant voice here, it’s an interesting new song, but we can only comment the same of the title, so It's ok.

The eighth track is one of the best songs of the album, “Ninety Five” is a well done work in composition, arrangements, instruments and voices. We can enjoy everything of this track, the choir has a very special voice’s game that only SIB as professionals could get in this way, the music is simply an excellent work that make you feel your don't want it ends. A pity the curious mispelled problem of the title that carried since the release.

“She is a Gambler”, is an uptempo song, more in the Johann style, modern eurodisco with some SIB falsettos. Maybe good for dance a while.

The tenth song, "Only You Can Break My Heart", is one of the favorites from fans, music is catchy, the composition is well constructed and this time includes plenty the so famous high pitch choir that SIB fans are always wishing to hear. Good song for remember from whom is this album, the low point are the lyrics, superficial and empty, but we can't complain because many Modern Talking hits were in this way.

And the last song of the album “Gimme Gimme”, it resembles to Blue System, actually it should be the way Blue System could sound in nowadays. Michael sings the vocals this time, choir tries to follow a simple catchy tune, but let a feeling of wish to hear something else. Anyway for be the last song, is something light.

So that's my personal review of this third album "Back In Blue", or I mean "Melange Bleu".

I am grateful with SIB members for this work, we all know what it has cost. Thanks to Johann Perrier for his motivation and support, thanks to Olaf Senkbeil for all the contribution of his talent, thanks to Michael Scholz for survive and our big and special thanks to our good friend Detlef Wiedeke, thanks for believe again, for make it possible, our extra personal thanks to him for allow to my partner dj-andy and me to listen the songs months before the official release. This is a big step forward for Systems In Blue and we only wish them all the good luck they need. We will be always there supporting them as friends.

The physical release includes 4 extended special versions, so we hope all fans can get this great work that SIB is giving us after almost ten years. Get your CD here.

Report Stars Der 80's in Circus Krone

Munich, 27th May of 2017. It was already pass the 7.30 pm and the people was sitting impatiently waiting the show starts. Suddenly we heard the voice of a man who announced to someone we know, Linda Jo Rizzo, she came to the stage. A brief hi and the music started, she started to sing the song “Passion”, one of her hits with Flirts, Linda walked from side to side making fans to sing with her. When the song ended, she greeted the people in english and german. Many international fans of disco music were there, so it was necessary the international language. Stars Der 80's was announced as a charity event in order to help children, but also as an eurodisco party.

The first artist of this event was announced and the show was going to start. In this way was called Gazebo, who went right to the stage and started to sing his classic hit “Masterpiece”. Gazebo was wearing a grey suit and he sang live with a charming elegancy that is always a featuring of his shows. The second song he sang was a song from his last album “Blindness”, a nice ballad that public followed calmly, then came a song that was popular in Germany, “Lunatic”, and after this came his version of “Dolce Vita”, for the next song, Gazebo told that it was a number one in Germany, so people screamed excited, the song was “I Like Chopin”, his more popular hit and it was very celebrated by his fans.  The song ended with a standing public, clapping effusively.

The first show was over, so Linda came back to the stage, she announced the next band, it was the Austrian band Joy. The stage was dark for a moment, soundtrack of Startrek was played as introduction and then the three guys came to the stage Andy, Michael and Manfred, they started to sing “Back To The 80’s”, the vocalist Michael Scheickl, who since some time already is replacing to Freddy Jaklitsch, was jumping and dancing happily with a lot of energy. In this way, the show of Joy was over and Linda came back once again to the stage.

First part of the event was over and she announced a break of 15 minutes. People could take those minutes for relax while the next part was coming. Some fans moved of seats and others started to talk. People from different countries were there, fans of Fancy, CCCatch, Gazebo and Joy.

After the pause, the moderator Linda announced the next star, this time was the turn of Fancy. His dancers came one by one, and the known intro of Fancy was played. Finally when he appeared, all people acclaimed him, fans were clapping and dancing while he was singing, “Slice Me Nice”, the public standing followed the song until the end, then Fancy said hello to everybody, he spoke some words about the place and reminded to people that they were in the famous Circus Krone, once Beatles were there in the same spot he was now. Next song now was coming and it was “Chinese Eyes”, then followed “Running Man”, “Bolero” and “Lady of Ice”, public was very excited and called him even from the tribunes of the place. Fancy said that the next song was already translated to many languages including the chinese, this song was “Flames Of Love”, dancers came back again and he took this moment for change his jacket, he wore the one that was being offered to the fans this day. After this song, came his special disco medley with cover songs of Pet Shop Boys and Kyle Minogue, he left from stage after this song and he came back with his classic jacket of leopard. After speak some words with the public the last song of his show started to sound, his Bolero Mix ("Bolero", "Chinese Eyes", "Lady Of Ice", "Flames Of Love"), the music of his outro was played after and he left the stage but instead to leave for the back part, he jumped to the public and went walking to the exit between them, public only followed him with claps.

Linda cameback and was time for the raffle announced during all the event. Organizers had to choose some winners from the public, the stuff that was being offered belonged to the singers that were present in this event and they donated it in special for this day. Lucky winners from public could win those special souvenirs.

After the raffle, Linda announced the last show of the night, so the show of CCCatch was ready to start. There were many guests from different countries that travelled specially for this show.

The audience shouted excited and the dancers came to stage. CCCatch began singing his rap short megamix (“I Can Lose My Heart Tonight”, "Cause You Are Young”, “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Soul Survivor”) with Gilly making the rap, while Moises was dancing. After the song, Caroline greeted all her fans who were in Munich. Next song was coming and this time was  “Heartbreak Hotel”, then she especially saluted her fans who had traveled from the farthest places in Europe only for be there, next song was "Heaven and Hell", and followed her hit "Jump In My Car", a song that she always ends acapella. She left the stage after that, public was clapping for more but after a moment, the dancers came saying that CCCatch was gone, it was only a joke, CCCatch came back, ready for the next song, that was the rap version of “I Can Lose My Heart Tonight”, someone from Spain screamed "Te quiero mucho", Caroline repeated the expression in a warm greeting, her next song was the original version of "You Shot A Hole In My Soul". After the song, she gave some words of thanks to the organizers, she thanked to Fancy for making this show possible, it was a charitable event for the children, so the cause was noble, also thanked her family who was supporting her with their presence. The next song announced was “Soul Suvivor” in rap version, the choreography by Gilly and Moises was spectacular as always. Next song announced was the “Anniversary Megamix” (“Strangers By Night”, “Cause You Are Young”, “Like A Hurricane”, “Midnight Gambler”), from the public someone approached a bouquet of red roses when the song was over, she thanked, and after her words, she left and let her dancers to manage the fans. One last song was set, this was the Rap Long Megamix, (“I Can Lose My Heart Tonight”, “Cause You Are Young”, “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Are You Man Enough”, “In The Backseat Of Your Cadillac”, “Heaven and Hell”, “Soul Suvivor”). The dancers took off their shirts during their choreography full of enthusiasm and energy and the audience did not stop applauding, the show was over. CCCatch said goodbye and at that moment, Linda Jo Rizzo along with the other artists who participated of the event came to the stage together. Gazebo, Joy, and Fancy, Caroline thanked Fancy again, but he came up to remind her something in her ear, she then realized that she was speaking in English, talking now in German she said to the public that everyone knew the international language, however her next words were only in German, she knew that people from all over the world had come to the show and not all were from German countries, this was also the reason, Linda started the show talking in Spanish. During this time the artists greeted each other. Linda thanked Gazebo, Joy and Fancy, and Fancy also did the same, so they bid farewell to the public, announcing the upcoming next event for November in Dresden.

That was all, the public began to look for the exit, some others stayed near the stage looking for a picture with the singers. Outside a long line already was formed for get an autograph from Linda Jo Rizzo, some other fans went to the encounter with Fancy and a special group from a list had the chance to meet with CCCatch. It took many time this waiting, until Caroline finally came. The group formed was not really little, but she had all the patience of the world for greet everyone, take pictures and sign records.

The Circus Krone was already almost empty, lights were turn off and still some fans were waiting for their turn to meet with CCCatch. Finally the last group was ready and this was the end for a very nice night of Eurodisco music in the heart of Munich.
